Rope Diameter Explained: 3/8 Scant, True and Full
What do scant, true and full mean on a 3/8 rope? They describe small steps around the 3/8 inch size. Explore these sizes and the products that offer them.

The short answer
Scant, true and full are labels for three close sizes around 3/8 inch. Scant is just under, true is right at it, and full is just over. Our White, Green, Orange and Gray full coils offer these sizes:
3/8 scant: 9.1 mm
3/8 true: 9.5 mm
3/8 full: 10.0 mm
The difference is less than a millimeter from step to step, but ropers can feel it in the hand and in how a rope fits.
Why the labels exist
A 3/8 inch rope is a common size for roping, yet ropers often want something slightly smaller or slightly larger. Instead of switching to a different fraction, the market uses scant and full to describe those small steps. True means the nominal 3/8 size.
Which Precision products use which size
3/8 scant: Amazon 4, Finish Him 4, Patriota 4 and Six Seals 6 team ropes.
3/8 true: Combat 4, Ranch Rope 4 Strand and Ranch Rope 6 Strand (9.5 mm).
Scant, true or full: White, Green, Orange and Gray full coils.
Compare diameter alongside lay, material and strand count. Handle ropes side by side when possible to find the size that suits your hand.
What a size change can feel like
A smaller diameter generally feels lighter and easier to close in the hand. A larger diameter generally feels like more rope to hold, with more body. Those are tendencies, not rules: material, strand count, core and lay also change how a rope feels, so two ropes with the same diameter can still feel different.
Don't compare labels across brands blindly
Scant, true and full are size labels, and measurements can differ between makers. Use the millimeter value where one is provided rather than assuming the same label has identical dimensions across brands. Compare ropes in hand when you can.
How to choose a diameter
1. If you like your current rope, stay with its diameter.
2. Change only one thing at a time: diameter or lay or model, not all three.
3. For team ropes, choose position and lay first; most Precision team ropes are 3/8 scant, with Combat 4 in 3/8 true.
4. For White, Green, Orange and Gray full coils, pick the diameter your customers ask for most; these four offer all three sizes.
