Ranch Ropes for Working Cattle
Ranch work asks something different from a rope than the arena does. You may rope at a longer distance, from rough ground, many times in a day, so length, feel and how the rope holds in your hand matter more than speed alone.
Precision offers finished ranch ropes in four strand and six strand construction, both 3/8 true in diameter.

What to Consider Before Choosing a Ranch Rope
- How far you rope
- Longer ropes give more reach and more rope to dally. Shorter ropes are easier to coil and handle in tight spaces.
- Four or six strand
- Six strand ropes have smaller strands and a different feel. One is not stronger or better by default; pick the one you handle best.
- Lay
- XS is the softer option on both ropes. The 6 strand also offers S for more body.
- Visibility
- A bright color, like the neon orange 6 strand, is easier to spot if a rope is dropped in grass or brush.
- Your experience
- Roping live cattle carries real risk for you and your horse. Get hands-on instruction before roping in the open.
What sets them apart
Length
The 4 strand rope comes in 52 ft and 64 ft. The 6 strand rope comes in 57 ft. Longer ropes reach farther and leave more to dally; shorter ropes are quicker to build a loop and coil.
Rope feel
Both ranch ropes are offered in XS lay, and the 6 strand also in S. A softer lay drapes and turns over easily; a firmer one keeps an open loop.
Grip
How a rope holds in your hand depends on its diameter, lay and surface. Both ranch ropes are 3/8 true, a full size that many ropers find comfortable to hold with gloves.
Color
The 4 strand is white. The 6 strand comes in green or bright neon orange for visibility in the pasture. Specifications are the same for both colors.
How to choose
- Think about the distance you usually rope at and how much rope you like left for the dally.
- Choose four or six strand by feel, not by assumption that one is stronger or better.
- Choose XS for a softer rope; the 6 strand also offers S for a little more body.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a team rope for ranch work?
Team ropes are 31 or 35 ft. Most ranch roping calls for more length, which is why the ranch ropes start at 52 ft.
Which length should I choose?
If you rope close in pens and alleys, a shorter rope is easier to handle. In open country or at the branding fire, extra length gives more reach.
Do you make custom lengths?
Finished ranch ropes come in the lengths listed. If you prefer to cut and tie your own, see our full coils.
