Stocking Team Ropes: A Practical Guide for Western Retailers
How do you choose a team rope selection that makes sense for your customers? Build it around who ropes in your area: their position, the lays they ask for and the feel they like, then fill in with models that cover those needs without overlapping.

The short answer
Start with your customers, not the catalog. Find out how many of them head and how many heel, which lays they ask for, and whether they prefer a heavier or a quicker feeling rope. Then choose models that cover those combinations with as little overlap as possible. There is no stock count that fits every store; the right mix depends on your market.
Know who ropes in your area
Team ropers range from people roping a few times a month to ropers who compete most weekends. Some rope both ends. Talk to your regular customers, note what they ask for that you don't have, and keep track of which positions and lays sell. A few weeks of notes at the counter tells you more than any general rule.
Position comes first
Every Precision team rope comes in two versions: a 31 ft head rope and a 35 ft heel rope. Their lengths and lay ranges are configured for different jobs, so position is the first split in your selection. If your customers are mostly heelers, your wall should reflect that.
Lay is the next split
Within each position, customers choose a lay. Precision offers:
Head ropes: XXS, XS, S, MS
Heel ropes on the four strand models: MS, M, HM
Heel ropes on the six strand models: MS, M
You don't need every lay of every model. Many shops cover the lays that move most in their area and order the rest on request. Remember that weather affects feel, so the lays your customers want can shift with the season.
Diameter and construction
Amazon 4, Finish Him 4, Patriota 4 and Six Seals 6 are 3/8 scant; Combat 4 is 3/8 true. The line includes four strand and six strand constructions, nylon and nylon/poly materials, and two four strand models with a core (Amazon 4 and Finish Him 4). These differences give customers real choices without needing a large number of models.
Choosing models that don't overlap
Think in terms of rope feel. In the Precision line:
Amazon 4 and Amazon 6: heavier feel and body weight, in four or six strand.
Finish Him 4: small and snappy, four strand with a core.
Combat 4: heavy, 100% nylon, 3/8 true.
Patriota 4: fast feel, nylon/poly blend, aqua color.
Six Seals 6: small, with tip weight, six strand.
A selection that includes one heavier option, one quicker option and one six strand option covers a wide range of preferences. Customers who want HM heel ropes need a four strand model.
Helping customers at the counter
Ask the same questions every time: head or heel, current lay, current rope, and what they would like to change. Let them handle ropes side by side. If a customer wants to switch, suggest moving one lay step rather than several. Our guide Questions to Ask Before Buying Your Next Rope follows the same order and can be shared with customers.
Displaying ropes
Group ropes by position first, then by lay, and label each rope with model, length and lay so customers can find what they need without unrolling it. Store extra stock dry, coiled and out of sun and heat.
